Few topics divide the beauty community as much as eye cream. Some argue that a good facial moisturiser can adequately do the job, while others see the importance of eye cream in a skincare routine.
Skincare brand GINGER&ME sits in the latter camp and have provided a breakdown to help shed light on why eye cream is an important part of your beauty arsenal.
The difference between eye and facial skin. Compared to the rest of your face, the skin around your eyes is very thin and delicate. Since your eyes are constantly blinking, squinting, and changing direction, the skin around them is always moving. This skin also has very few oil glands, so there isn't much of your skin's natural oil (sebum) in this area.
These characteristics make the skin around your eyes susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles, particularly crow's feet.
Why is eye cream essential? Unlike facial moisturiser, eye creams are developed specifically for the skin around your eyes. They're thin and lightweight, preventing your skin from feeling clogged or greasy.
Eye creams generally don't contain high strength exfoliants, as this skin doesn't require as much exfoliation as the rest of your face. In fact, over-exfoliating in this area may lead to redness, dryness, and irritation.
If you're prone to milia, using a dedicated eye cream can be especially beneficial. Milia are tiny, harmless cysts filled with built-up keratin and are commonly found around the eyes. Using moisturiser around your eye may disrupt the skin's natural exfoliation process, so a lightweight eye cream is excellent for moisturising the area without overdoing it.
What to look for. Your eye cream should provide nourishing, plumping, and brightening effects to refresh the look of the skin around your eyes. It should feel light and smooth on your skin to avoid pilling when layered with sunscreen or make-up.
