Jail outbreak grows as NSW records three deaths, 1164 new cases

Across NSW there were 1164 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Monday, down from the 1290 fresh cases announced a day earlier.

The death of the three people - a woman in her 50s, a man in his 80s and a second man in his 90s - took the outbreak's total death toll to 96.

Authorities said 143 people are intensive care, 53 of them on ventilators and more than 800 in hospital.

NSW correctional facilities are all in lockdown after an alarming outbreak. A massive 43 cases of COVID-19 were reported at Parklea Correctional Centre to 8pm on Monday night, bringing the total number of cases since August 18 to 75, including one healthcare worker.

There has also been one new case linked to the Bathurst Correctional Centre to 8pm Monday night, bringing the total number of cases there to seven - all are staff members.

NSW chief health officer Dr Karry Chant said authorities were working with corrections services in testing patients and staff, identifying and isolating contacts and providing immunisation to staff and inmates.

And the outbreak in the west of the state continued to grow, with an additional 54 cases overnight.

There also were four cases in the Wollongong area and one in Shellharbour; four cases on the Central Coast, two in the Hunter and one in Googong, Southern NSW.

Four new cases were acquired overseas in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. The total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic is 26,820.

More than 130,000 tests were conducted in the 24-hour period.

With two-thirds of the state's population having received a first dose of vaccination, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urged those yet to get the jab to make it their goal for September.

"Once we know that you've signed up to your first dose we know that you'll be getting your second dose," Ms Berejiklian said.

Yesterday, NSW recorded 1290 locally-acquired COVID-19 cases and four deaths in the 24-hour reporting period.
