Rebecca Halcomb has always dreamed of becoming a vet.
The 16-year-old Narellan resident recently had the chance to learn a little more about the veterinary field at Future Vet Kids Camp.
Rebecca received the 2021 PetSure Scholarship to attend the veterinary-inspired five-day school holiday program that encourages veterinary medicine and a love and appreciation of all animals and their habitats.
At Future Vet Kids Camp Rebecca said had hands-on experience with animals, learning how to suture, take blood, study real life cases and more.
"I have always had a passion for animals and being a vet has always been my dream," she said.
"I guess I just feel a connection to animals and want to help them when they are at their most vulnerable.
"When I realised that my dream was within my reach, I was so excited and have since been working on my animal experience and other skills which will help me to get there one day."
The avid animal lover said she was delighted to take part in thsi year's camp.
"Future Vet Kids Camp was an amazing experience for me. It really opened my eyes to a variety of aspects and specialisations within veterinary science," Rebecca said.
"I also loved meeting new people who shared my passion for animals as well as those who are well established in their field."
The camp is designed and run by qualified veterinarians.
Camp teacher and Aussie Mobile Vet co-founder Dr Audrey Shen said the camp was an invaluable source of inspiration for future veterinarians.
"We wish we had a camp like this when we were young that opened our eyes to different careers in veterinary medicine," she said.
"It showcases all the opportunities available as veterinarians and other wonderful professions in the animal industry.
"Many campers return every year to learn more and progress through the camp groups."
