Wollondilly council is promoting the area as a great tourist attraction for people loking to explore destinations outside of the Sydney CBD.

"As the NSW and Australian Governments slowly relax our movement restrictions, it's great to know that you can now hit the road and get into the great outdoors to take in the fresh air and country sights by visiting the Dilly for a day trip," mayor Matthew Deeth said.

"The Dilly, also known as the Wollondilly Shire, is a great option for an outing as it is only just over an hours drive from the Sydney CBD and 30 minutes from Western Sydney.

Cr Deeth said the Dilly may be relatively unknown to many Sydney-siders and those from nearby areas in Western Sydney, Blue Mountains and the Illawarra, but its a fabulous place for a day trip to enjoy some wide-open spaces, history, great food, farms with fresh produce, and unique attractions like the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere

"Within the Dilly there are five iconic dams, including the Warragamba Dam, well known for providing most of Sydney's drinking water and a great place for picnics," he said.

"The other four dams are Cataract Dam in Appin, Cordeaux Dam in Wilton and Avon and Nepean Dams accessed via Bargo.

"The village of Picton offers an array of shops to browse through including homewares, giftware, produce, fabrics, and collectibles.

The mayor said one of the most spectacular views in Wollondilly is from the Burragorang lookout on the edge of the Blue Mountains escarpment.

"It is a great viewing point for natures great beauty. Don't forget your camera and look out for the shy lyrebirds or the glossy black cockatoos," he said.

"The NSW Rail Museum, located at Thirlmere, which will re-open in early July is popular with both kids and grown-ups.

"A five-minute drive away is Thirlmere Lakes National Park, here you will see the Heritage Pump Station part of the towns interesting locomotive history and why not book a steam train ride from Thirlmere.

The Dilly includes the townships of Picton, Tahmoor, Thirlmere, Warragamba, Appin, Silverdale and more.
