A key Barnaby Joyce backer has refused to guarantee Nationals leader Michael McCormack a clear run to lead the party to the next federal election.
NSW MP David Gillespie was repeatedly asked whether Mr McCormack would have an unhindered path to the poll due in or by 2022.
Dr Gillespie said the leadership issue was closed "for now" while also dismissing the idea of another challenge as a "crystal ball" issue.
"I can't foresee any change in the situation," he told ABC News Breakfast on Wednesday.
"Arithmetic does apply. It's up to Michael to prosecute our case as our leader."
Forces loyal to Mr Joyce have continued to destabilise Mr McCormack after the deputy prime minister fended off a leadership challenge earlier in the month.
"We have our grievances, like any family, but that matter has been closed, done and dusted and we're focusing on what people put us in parliament for," Dr Gillespie said.
