Specialist prison guards across NSW will use body-worn cameras when rushing into prisoners' cells to deal with dangerous situations.
Corrections Minister Anthony Roberts says the cameras will provide evidence when guards use force, raid a cell or are potentially assaulted themselves.
"Our immediate action teams are the first responders to critical incidents in the correctional environment ... this technology will allow them to respond to situations quickly and confidently," the minister said in a statement on Tuesday.
The camera on the front of an officer's uniform remains in stand-by mode until the guard hits the record button.
The camera then retains 30 seconds of video prior to it being activated and continues recording until it's switched off.
"These body-worn cameras enable our officers to record high-quality digital video evidence of a contraband raid or use of force with the press of a button," Corrective Services NSW commissioner Peter Severin said in a statement.
The state-wide roll-out follows a nine-month trial of body-worn cameras at selected maximum-security prisons.
