East Campbelltown Eagles under 9s take out two titles

Winning seems to be the only option for these Campbelltown under nine young guns.

Over the last three months the team has picked up two Junior Rugby League tournaments; the Pesle Dicker Shield in Emu Plains and the Paea Cup in Minto.

The talented youngsters also bagged the Under 9 Division 1 Wests Tigers Macarthur Minor Premiership and Premiership titles in their first year of competition.

The red and white from Campbelltown ventured out to Leonay Oval in Emu Plains on Saturday, September 14 to take on the best that the Penrith Junior Rugby League had to offer.

Of the 32 teams that took part, the East Campbelltown Eagles were the only team from outside the Penrith district.

The team went on to win five games over the day.

Blacktown Workers, St Clair Comets and Brothers Penrith buckled under the might of the Eagles with only one try getting sneaking through the stalwart defence over the three games.

Cambridge Park put up a fight but couldn't stop the powerhouse team from Campbelltown in the semi-finals and the St Clair Comets Division 1 team saw their hot streak come to an end in the grand-final.

The East Campbelltown kids went on to be crowned undefeated Pesle Dicker Shield champions.

The Pesle Dicker Shield was founded in 2011 and began as a competition between the Emu Plains and St Marys A-Grade sides.

In 2016 the Shield evolved to become an Under 9s Gala Day open to teams from within and beyond the Penrith district.

"The aim wasn't necessarily to win the tournament, it was more about giving the team an opportunity to play in an event in another district and further build the comradery amongst the kids," said coach Daniel Milford.

"The coaching team has focused on development and discipline all season and I believe the team's success is founded from this.

"The Eagles are to be congratulated for representing themselves, their club and the Wests Tigers Macarthur area with distinction, with their bone-rattling defensive style of play attracting many fans despite the district rivalry."

Just two weeks prior, the junior Eagles went head to head with the Minto Cobras in the grand-final at Campbelltown Stadium and came out the other end victorious with a 24 -12 win, collecting the club's first of five premiership titles for that weekend alongside the under 10-1's, 11-1's, 15's and Senior Bronze teams.

In June, they also took part in a 16 team tournament - the Paea Cup, hosted by local club Minto Cobras and named after the rugby league first grade brothers, Lopini, Mickey and Lelea Paea.

The East Campbelltown team went through undefeated, besting St Johns Eagles, Kellyville Bushrangers and Eagle Vale St Andrews in the round games, Quakers Hill Destroyers in the semi-final and Bankstown Sports Junior Rugby League in the grand-final, conceding only four points the entire tournament and becoming the first local team to win the competition.

If the past is anything to go on, we expect this team to continue to turn heads and raise eyebrows for next year's Under 10's competition.

The team comprised of eleven players over the season; Noah Pita, Cooper Firman, Rocky Latu, Damarion Fotualii, Hendrix Neave, Jesse Ropata, Lincoln Lamese, Elijah Thompson, Urijah Brown, Jyai Milford and the team's only girl, Alilia Sauvao.

Four additional players lent their services during the tournaments; Jayden Thompson, Monson Hopoate, Spencer Sorensen and Loutazz Leuka.

The team is currently raising funds for a tour to the Sunshine State, Queensland where the team hopes to stir up some of the competition with some friendly 'state vs state' rivalry.
