FIGHT ON: Dr Sandra Cabot says a healthy immune system is vital to fight disease.

Infectious diseases were scored among the top 10 causes of death worldwide in 2016 by the World Health Organisation.

The most common microbes that cause disease in humans are bacteria or viruses with parasites being less common in rich countries.

Dr Sandra Cabot of the Camden Holistic Clinic says the overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance.

This means that the bacteria are no longer sensitive to the antibiotic.

"Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections are potentially very dangerous and increase the risk of death," Dr Cabot said.

"Antibiotic drugs are often inappropriately prescribed for influenza, urinary, respiratory tract and skin infections.

"The increasing rates of antibiotic resistant bacteria could lead us to a future where we have very limited antibiotics to treat serious infections."

The Camden Holistic Clinic team use strategies designed to boost your own innate defenses and immune strength.

"To be able to fight infections of all types you need a healthy gut, healthy liver and good nutritional status," Dr Cabot said.

"We see a lot of patients who are deficient in nutrients vital for a strong immune system.

"We have been educating our patients about nutritional medicine and ozone therapies to fight infections that have become chronic."
