Coalition MPs are pushing for a shorter time frame for voters to cast early ballots at federal elections.
A parliamentary committee is examining whether changes should be made to early voting.
Victorian Liberal Tim Wilson said opening the polls three weeks in advance was too early.
"They should instead be opened one week earlier locally and three weeks earlier for central business districts and airports," he wrote to the committee.
Queensland Nationals MP Keith Pitt said while early voting was increasingly popular, a number of problems with it included the taxpayer cost and difficulty for candidates and volunteers to get to every booth over a three-week period.
Mr Pitt said in his electorate of Hinkler there were two pre-poll booths only 500 metres apart, one of which was attended by only 51 voters over three weeks.
He said many people were voting early without a valid reason, pointing to the 49.4 per cent pre-poll voting rate in his seat.
He called on the Australian Electoral Commission to reveal the cost of early voting in each electorate as a way of informing the public about the need for an overhaul of the system.
The committee also heard from disability advocate Anthony Koch, who wrote of the need to keep pre-poll voting as flexible and available as possible.
"Since I find it difficult for medical reasons to stand in a queue to vote, I like pre-poll (voting)," he said.
