It's time to jump behind the handle bars and test your skills on a BMX bike.

The Macarthur BMX Club will host a "Ride In 2 BMX" Day on September 21 at Elderslie's Kirkham Park.

Club president Fred Furner said the event was open to anyone interested in trying the sport.

Furner said 10 club coaches would be on hand to guide newcomers into BMX riding.

"We hold these events every February and September and normally attract 40 to 50 riders, of all ages," he said.

"You don't need to be licensed. It's a free trial and a two-hour session."

The Macarthur club has more than 400 members and is the biggest BMX club in NSW.

The club is based at Kirkham Park.

Furner said the sport was popular in Macarthur and continued to grow.

"The majority of people who come along to these try BMX days do sign up to the club," he said.

"Our club has a good family feel about it - we help each other.

"BMX riding is a friendly sport and anyone can take it. We have families where every member rides."

Furner told the Advertiserearlier this year that BMX riding was "exciting and challenging" for competitors.

"I compare BMX riding to the 100-metre and 200-metre sprints in athletics," he said.

"People are a bit unaware of our club because it's an alternative sport.

"It's not a team sport like football or netball - but we have a lot of girls jump into the sport."

The free Ride In 2 BMX Day will be held at Krikham Park on Saturday, September 21 from noon to 2pm.

Children and adults are invited to come along. They are encouraged to bring their bike, helmet, a long sleeve shirt, long pants and gloves.

The club will provide extra gear if necessary.
