STILL GOING STRONG: Aussie band GANGgajang is ready to put on a great show at the Bargo Sports Club on September 13.

GANGgajang has been a favourite band among Aussie surfer circles for many decades.

This is something that still confuses and intrigues the band's frontman Mark Callaghan.

GANGgajang - which will perform next month at the Bargo Sports Club - has provided some classic tracks, including Sounds of Then and Circles in the Sand.

But the band is arguably best known for providing the soundtrack for surf movie Mad Wax.

Mad Wax: The Surf Movie was presented by Quiksilver in 1987. It featured some of the world's biggest surfers and quickly became a cult favourite among surfers.

It also led to GANGgajang twice being named world's best band at the Association of Surfing Professionals awards.

However, Callaghan said he had never been interested in the sport.

"I have always been a huge sports fan, but was not surfing," he said. "Max Wax was massive for us and gave us this strange connection to the surf mass. There are young grommets who were shown our music by their fathers and grandfathers."

GANGgajang formed in 1984 and Callaghan said the band had generated a great fanbase. He said the key to GANGgajang's success was spending time apart.

"We live in different cities and we get together now for 15 to 25 shows a year," he said.

"It keeps it really fresh because we love hanging out. It's like going on a fishing trip with mates."

GANGgajang is back on tour to promote its current single, Surfing Round the World. The song is on the soundtrack of Australian surf music documentary, Delightful Rain.

GANGgajang's tour will include a show at the Bargo Sports Club on Friday, September 13. Tickets are $33 per person.

Callaghan promised the band would put on a great gig.

"Come down with your mates and have a fun night," he said.

"Some songs you will know, and there will be songs that you that you didn't think you knew.

"You will see some wonderful musicians - not me - but the other guys are great."
