"It's everything you love about the movie story with the big musical theatre song and dance numbers you expect on stage."
Leppington actor Jake Speer can't wait for people to see his new musical Catch Me If You Can at the Hayes Theatre in Potts Point this month.
The show is based on the real-life story of Frank Abignale Jr and the film of the same name.
Speer remembers being impressed by Abignale's antics when the film came out and was thrilled to have the opportunity to play the con man on stage.
"I kind of understand where he's coming from as he steps into other people's shoes - that's what I do as an actor," he said.
"But at the same time I'd never walk onto a plane without training and try to fly it, or walk into the emergency room of a hospital and try and treat patients."
Speer thinks it is his approach to the character of Abignale that won him the role.
"I thought of him as just this boy that's trying to find a family, to find a father," he said. "When I discussed that with our director he was on the same page."
Speer, who had a recurring role on Home and Away, said theatre was a more immediate medium than TV but he loved both in different ways.
He said the whole family would find something to love about Catch Me If You Can.
