They might not lay golden eggs but Michael Peel's geese are worth a small fortune.

The Theresa Park farmer recently sold a breeding pair of grey toulouse geese for a record-breaking price.

The feathery couple swooped their proud breeder with a $4250 prize tag at the recent Canberra Royal Agricultural Show.

Mr Peel said he never expected the birds to fetch such a large amount.

"My flock is very sought after as we often win at the Sydney Royal show," he said.

"I am known for having high quality animals and I wasn't even intending to sell this pair of birds.

"I certainly didn't expect to be offered that much money for them."

The birds will wing their way over to Western Australia where their new owner hopes to start a flock of his own.

"There are no grey toulouse geese in WA at the moment so this will be the first step in creating a flock over there," Mr Peel said.

"And they are coming all the way from here."

Mr Peel is a former dairy farmer but has tried his hand at breeding various other animals over the years.

"I have had Angora goats and now the geese," he said.

"I even created my own breed of geese called the Camden white.

"They were named after this area, of course."

The avid farmer said he first experienced life with geese when he was younger.

"My brother bought one home in 1963 so we always had them as pets," Mr Peel said.

"Geese are really hardy birds, they are very easy to raise as goslings.

"You can graze them like sheep out in the paddock - they gain weight pretty quickly too.

"They don't really get diseases and generally flocks are pretty healthy."

Mr Peel said he was 'egg'-cited that his prized geese had been purchased for such a high price.

"I only release geese for sale every two or three years," he said.

"Back in 2016 a pair of my grey toulouse geese sold for $3400 so it goes to show that they just keep growing in value.

"it's very pleasing to see that people appreciate my breeding stock."
