An investigation is under way after a man was injured in an accident at Appin coal mine on Saturday night.
The contractor sustained several foot injuries while working underground.
It is understood the man - whose age has not been revealed - fell through safety mesh while undertaking cleaning operations and his foot was caught in a strip conveyor.
First aid was applied and the worker was taken to hospital.
The mine is operated by the South32 Illawarra Metallurgical Coal company.
Illawarra Coal operations vice-president Jason Economidis said the impacted work area had been isolated.
"We are working with the [NSW Resources] regulator to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the incident," he said.
"The safety and well-being of our people is paramount at South32.
"Our thoughts go out to our injured colleague."
