Camden Airport has won a prestigious industry award for its work helping to protect a wombat colony which calls the site home.

The airport picked up the environmental management award at this month’s National Airport Industry Awards.

Airport management received the award on the back of its strong work with community groups, including Greater Sydney Local Land Services, Conservation Volunteers Australia and Landcare Australia.

Australian Airports Association chief executive Caroline Wilkie congratulated the staff on their excellent achievement.

“Camden Airport’s conservation work reflects a real commitment to being a part of the community’s sustainable future,” she said.

“This is a fantastic project and shows just what can be achieved when airports and their communities work together.

“It is wonderful to see the project delivering tangible benefits that will ensure generations to come have the chance to enjoy the local area’s biodioversity.”

The airport works closely with the community groups to protect wombats from mange, a terrible condition which can be debilitating and eventually lead to a painful death.

Volunteers installed specialised flaps – like wombat ‘doggy doors’ – at the entrance to burrows at the airport site.

A mange treatment was applied to the burrow flaps to help combat the condition.

The project helped to “significantly reduce mange in the wombat population within the airport’s Environmental Protection Zone, improving the local eco-system”.

There are about 50-100 wombats living near the airport, and the wombat mange project targeted about 40 of them.

Camden Airport chief executive Lee de Winton said it was wonderful to win the award.

“This was just one of the environmental projects that we have on the run, but it was definitely the sweetest.”
