People living rough in Campbelltown were in for a special treat at the weekend when celebrity chef Manu Feildel stopped by to feed the homeless.
The My Kitchen Rules judge visited The Sleep Doctor on Blaxland Road for charity We Are Community’s monthly Sunday roast dinner service.
We Are Community founder Paul Mackin said he was happy the chef took the time to visit Macarthur.
“Manu is actually a friend of mine and I asked him to drop by when he had some time which he graciously did on Sunday,” he said.
“He was happy to make some food for my friends – the homeless and the less fortunate.”
Mr Mackin said the Sunday roast services were always uplifting, but Mr Feildel’s visit made this one extra special.
The Sunday service typically provides meals to about 30-40 people.
Mr Mackin said We Are Community provided roughly 200 meals each week.
“We do get a lot of familiar faces but there are new people popping up all the time as well,” he said.
“In addition to the services at The Sleep Doctor, who are our sponsor, we also travel around the entire Macarthur area providing hot meals to the homeless.”
Mr Mackin also thanked Sonya Moulang from Campbelltown’s Bar Centrale for consistently helping to make and deliver fresh food for the service.
He said people underestimated just how much assistance was needed for homeless people in Macarthur.
“Our systems fail them a lot of the time,” he said.
“People can be put into homes and then just left without any more help.
“People who come from misfortune often need help to achieve the basic skills, including washing their clothes and cooking a meal for themselves.
“I hope We Are Community can expand to offer those kind of services in the future.”
Mr Mackin said he was looking to find a premises in Campbelltown which could be the base of operations for the charity.
He currently operates We Are Community from his St Andrews home.
Mr Mackin said the charity was looking for more corporate sponsors and was always pleased to accept in-kind or financial donations.
