R&B Music Tahmoor to close doors in November

It’s time to say goodbye to Wollondilly’s sole music shop.

R&B Music owners Bob and Robyn Colefax have announced they will close the Tahmoor store’s doors permanently after 28 years in business.

Mr Colefax said a closing date hadn’t been confirmed but the couple aimed to close R&B Music by mid-November.

He said the decision was made due to a fall in sales in recent years.

“We just couldn’t keep our head above water anymore,” Mr Colefax said.

“A lot of music businesses like ours have been around as long as us and have closed down in recent times.

“It’s very mixed emotions to close down, but disappointment is one of the big ones.”

R&B Music has sold instruments, offered lessons through a music school and instrument repair and servicing.

We just couldn’t keep our head above water anymore.

Mr Colefax said R&B Music had struggled to compete against internet sales and major businesses such as JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.

“It’s been a learning curve with the internet. People don't care about quality, they just don't want to spend the money,” he said.

“We’ve seen also downturn in music participation. Most of the schools in the region have introduced in house tuition.

“We used to have 150 students but that has been down to 70 in recent years.”

After the store closes, Mr and Mrs Colefax will continue to teach lessons and provide instrument services from home.

The couple, who have two children and 11 grandchildren, thanked the Wollondilly community for providing support for nearly three decades

“They’re not our customers, these are our family and friends who have been part of our lives for 20-odd years,” Mr Colefax said.

“We’ve been able to make a living for 28 years and raise a family here.”

The closing down announcement attracted an outpouring of well wishes on the Advertiser’s Facebook page.

Nicole Speakman said the decision was “Heartbreaking. I wish you the best for your next chapter. Please people support all local Businesses where you can.”

Cindy Morris wished the Colefaxs all the best and said “we will miss your beautiful smiles and laughter, thank you for helping our children learn the love of music”.

Julie Morris said it was “so sad to hear that you are closing. You taught both my boys to play instruments and they still remember you and your shop.”

R&B Music will hold a closing down sale over the coming weeks. All stock must go.
