Boys – and girls – start school at St Gregory's College Junior School

Today, for the first time, female students were officially able to call St Gregory’s College home.

Parents and kids from year 1 to year 6 descended on the co-educational junior school for the first day of classes.

Principal Joel Weekes said it was “exciting” times for all involved.

“So far so good. We are making history which is great,” he said.

“It has been a long time coming and a lot of planning but it all went quite smoothly. Now we are all looking forward to an exciting first week and first year.”

Mr Weekes – who attended school down the road at Mount Carmel Catholic College, Varroville – was appointed the principal in 2016 and has spent every day since ensuring the school opened without a hitch.

He said he woke up today with an extra spring in his step.

“It was a nice early morning this morning. I got here to make sure everything was working properly, the bell was up and running and the microphone was working,” he said.

“The staff were visible meeting and greeting parents and kids, and making sure they felt welcome.

“I didn’t see any tears which is good – just lots of smiling and excitement about the day.”

Mr Weekes said the youngest members of the school – the kindergarten students – would officially start on Thursday and do two half days, with full days starting from Monday next week.
