Man charged with assault during Minto soccer match

A MAN has been charged after he assaulted off-duty police officers during an indoor soccer match in Minto.

The game started about 8.30pm on Monday between a team comprising four police and two civilians, and another men’s team.

Halfway through the second half, after the police team scored a goal, one of the opposing team members allegedly assaulted a member of the police team.

A melee erupted resulting in one officer suffering a suspected broken jaw and head injuries, and another officer suffering a suspected broken nose. A third man also suffered a suspected fractured elbow.

They were all taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment.

On Tuesday, a 23-year-old man presented himself to Macquarie Fields Police Station where he was arrested.

The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and given strict conditional bail to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on November 14.

Inquires into the matter are continuing.
