About 5000 waratahs were sold on Friday as part of the annual fundraiser, Waratah Day.

The local event — a brainchild of Beautiful Minds founder Sandra McDonald — raises money for local mental health services.

The funds, estimated to reach about $15,000 once after expenses, will go towards providing gardens and outdoor fitness equipment at Campbelltown Hospital’s Birunji youth mental health unit.

Mrs McDonald said the new additions to the unit would hopefully assist and speed up the recovery of patients.

‘‘Your physical body needs to be healthy to support your mental health,’’ she said.

Mrs McDonald also thanked the thousands of locals who purchased a flower from the several stalls throughout Macarthur.
