Hundreds of young locals are closer to getting a job thanks to a successful job night last week.
More than 300 people attending MWLP’s Jobs for Youth Night held at Wests League Club last Monday.
Attendees had the opportunity to speak with local businesses, TAFE representative and other employment providers.
My Gateway was just one of the organisations in attendance on the night.
Services manager Adam Farmer said he spoke to many people who were unaware of the employment opportunities in the Macarthur area.
“We loved meeting so many great parents and young people, all of them hungry for information about the great careers that start with an apprenticeship or traineeship, as opposed to university,” he said.
“Many parents were surprised to learn that apprentices and trainees get paid a wage, get paid to go to TAFE and that My Gateway pays their student fees, so they’re not saddled with crippling student debts when they finish.
“We expect to hire about 200 apprentices and trainees over the next 12 months, so it was great for us to meet all those eager young kids that we hope to hire when they finish their schooling.”
Several local students left the fair optimistic about the future employment opportunities.
Lucas Chown, a year 10 student at St Gregory’s College, said he was pleased with the information he picked up by speaking with Mast Builders Association and TABMA about a plumbing apprenticeship.
“I wouldn’t have known where to go to find to find out all this information,” he said.
“My dad did a pre-apprenticeship in 1982 and then got into fitting and machining, and he is happy for me to go down this path.
“I don’t want to stay on at school after I complete year 10. I want to be out and working.”
Elderslie High’s Marco Carvalho, also a year 10 student, was interested in becoming an electrician and found the wealth of information on hand at the fair to be extremely valuable.
“This is really good,” he said.
“There are so many opportunities and lots of information.
“There is more out there than my dad and I thought.”
The night also saw year 12 students from Robert Townson High School prepare a light supper for guests, under the watchful eye of Wests executive chef Graham Krueger.
