A homeless man who spent his last $US20 ($27) on petrol for a woman who got stranded on a highway has now received $US115,000 ($150,000) in donations after the woman set up a GoFundMe campaign to help him get housing.
US woman Kate McClure said she met the man, Johnny, after her car ran out of petrol on the way to Philadelphia.
"Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign," Ms McClure wrote on the GoFundMe page.
"He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong. He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors.
"A few minutes later, he comes back with a red [petrol] can. Using his last 20 dollars to make sure I could get home safe."
Ms McClure said she has returned several times to pay Johnny back and give him food and warm clothing, and is now raising money for two months' rent, a car and expenses.
"He is very interested in finding a job, and I believe that with a place to be able to clean up every night and get a good night's rest, his life can get back to being normal," Ms McClure wrote.
She said Johnny is a veteran of the US Marine Corps and was previously a firefighter and paramedic.
"This is just a reminder that this could happen to any of us," Ms McClure wrote.
Nearly 4000 people have donated about to the campaign in the past 12 days, with more donations continuing to appear on the page.
Ms McClure posted a photo of Johnny in a hotel on Thursday and said they are now looking for a home for him.
"This has surpassed our wildest expectations," Ms McClure said.
She also posted a video of Johnny when he was first told about the donations.
"That changes my life, right there," Johnny said.
"Cleaning up and having a place, getting a job comes from that.
"I have honestly met more good people than bad, I honestly have, that's amazing."
