Southbound lanes have re-opened on the Hume Highway following a serious accident on Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic has been heavy in the area, but is easing now that all lanes are open.

The Hume Highway remains closed to southbound traffic on Wednesday afternoon.

An accident involving a truck and car occurred north of the Menangle Road turnoff more than two hours ago.

A helicopter has arrived at the scene of the two-vehicle accident.

Motorists are advised to avoid the highway.

Diversions are in place for all vehicles via Narellan Road, Camden Bypass, Old Hume Highway and Picton Road.

Fire and Rescue NSW personnel have arrived to help out following a two-vehicle accident on the Hume Highway on Wednesday afternoon.

 A person is currently trapped in their vehicle.

There are delays on the Hume Highway on Wednesday afternoon following a two-vehicle accident.

The accident involving a truck and car occurred north of the Menangle Road turnoff at about 12.30pm.

As a result, the highway is closed in the southbound direction.

There are heavy traffic conditions in the area.

Transport Management Centre spokeswoman Bronwyn Martin said emergency services were working to free a person trapped in one of the vehicles.

Ms Martin said motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Diversions are currently in place for light vehicles via Narellan Road, Appin Road, Wilton Road and Picton Road.
