Macarthur is alive with the Sound of Music.

Woftam Productions is bringing the famous musical to Campbelltown Town Hall Theatre this week and director Peter Novakovich can’t wait for locals to sing along.

The production has a cast of 32 actors and most hail from the Campbelltown, Camden and Picton.

Novakovich said the show would be quite familiar for fans of the 1960s Oscar-winning film.

“We’ve got the Von Trapps and the Nazis and all those songs,” he said.

“It’s just a little smaller in scope.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t fly the Alps in - they won’t fit in the theatre.”

The director said he began pursuing the Sound of Music last year because one of the songs stuck in his head.

“Last year was 2016, going on to 2017,” he said.

“It felt like a sign: ‘I am 16, going on 17’.

“Woftam has never done a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical before, so the timing was right.”

The Sound of Music follows the real life story of Austria’s Von Trapp family, after nun Maria becomes their new governess and brings music into their lives.

Novakovich said the most challenging aspect of the production was finding the right children to play the Von Trapps.

Not only did the children have to have great acting chops and fabulous singing voices, the also had to be believable as siblings.

The youngest – “very impressive” – cast member is just eight years old.

Novakovich said it was both “daunting and exciting” to bring to life a story and production known so well to so many people.

Previous Woftam productions have included a Star Wars musical parody and the Phantom of the Opera.

The Sound of Music will run at Campbelltown Town Hall Theatre from this Friday, August 11 until Saturday, August 26.

Tickets are $35 or $30 concessions.
