It’s that time of year again – the annual Beautiful Minds Mad Hatters event is just around the corner.

The dinner raises funds and awareness for mental health support and services in the Macarthur region.

Beautiful Minds founder Sandra McDonald said patients in the region’s adolescent Mental Health Unit Gna Ka Lun (part of the Campbelltown Hospital complex) were lacking some of the vital aspects needed for successful recovery – “beauty, physical activity, music and fun”.

The Mad Hatters event, however, is filled with fun and frivolity.

“The idea of the event is to be a celebration of mental health recovery,” she said.

“That’s why we focus on projects in our community that need to be focussed on to be improved.

“[Improving Gna Ka Lun] is a big project – if you gave us hundreds of thousands of dollars we could easily spend it well there.

“Whatever we raise will go to good use – $25,000 would be absolutely fantastic.

“Almost more importantly though, I’d like to see the event raise awareness about how mental illness can visit anyone’s family, and in the process drive down stigma surrounding mental illness.”

The event will be co-run by Beautiful Minds partners from TAFE South-West Sydney Institute, with hospitality and event students working the night and gaining hands-on experience.

The Mad Hatters event will be held at Wests Leagues Leumeah on Saturday, April 29 from 6pm-11pm.

This year’s theme is ‘Moulin Rouge’ and guests are encouraged to wear their best crazy hats.

Musical guests will include tribute performers for Katy Perry and Cher, the ‘stunning girls show’ and Sincopa.
