A DIFFERENT way to blend the old and the new will be the new trend, according to Dulux.
Referred to as ‘Future Past’, the trend references various design eras and showcases opulence and classicism with a contemporary twist.
It celebrates a return to fine craftsmanship and detail, with minimalism nowhere to be seen.
Here’s some tips from Dulux stylist Bree Leech about how to achieve this trend at home:
• Celebrate antiques, heirlooms and traditional décor in a modern setting – update older pieces with new finishes such as upholstery in bold colour or pattern, or a coat of paint to add a modern colour twist.
• Feature art with traditional subject matter, such as portraits or landscapes, in a contemporary setting against on trend colour. Alternatively, feature modern art against traditional architectural features such as wall panelling, dado rails or elaborate crown mouldings.
• The trick to mixing old and new is balance – for every feature from the past counterbalance it with a modern reference, material or colour.
• Choose a feature piece that conveys the trend - art is a perfect way to do this but you could also feature a modern chandelier or wall light for example.
• Colour can be traditional (such as deep moody hues) or create a modern backdrop for your new heirloom pieces using striking colour combinations such as pink and green in a graphic design.
