WHEN Darren Neville set off for Glenquarie Tavern on the night of Saturday, September 1, it was to enjoy a few drinks with his mates.
But the Macquarie Fields resident didn't make it home that night and detectives are still trying to work out why.
Instead, the 41-year-old was found sprawled on a footpath, unconscious and not breathing, near the intersection of Eucalyptus and Rosewood drives shortly after 2am the next day.
He could not be revived.
Macquarie Fields police believe he may have been bashed as he walked from the pub to his home nearby.
Another man, 39, was found unconscious next to Mr Neville and he was later treated for head injuries.
Detective Senior Constable James Gatward, of Macquarie Fields police, has urged anyone who was in the area that night to come forward. "Investigating police have spoken to a number of witnesses who have described the attackers as males of Pacific Islander appearance," he said.
"Police are following a number of leads and are certain there are witnesses who have yet to come forward to provide information.
"This includes people who attended a nearby party at James Meehan High School that night."
Senior Constable Gatward said Mr Neville had not died of gunshot wounds and no weapon was found.
"We're still waiting on medical confirmation on the cause of death but it's suspected he died as a result of his injuries."
