WHAT do posh hotels and display homes have in common?
They are relaxing places where we'd like to live on a permanent basis.
Why? Because they are clutter-free.
Clutter at home can cause anxiety and stress as the pile of bills or abandoned knick-knacks waiting for a home on the kitchen bench are a constant reminder we need to be more organised.
Supercheap Storage chief executive Edward Thirlwall said regular clean ups and de-cluttering did more for the average person than they could imagine.
"By organising your personal items and placing what isn't immediately necessary into storage, you can avoid feeling stressed and out of control," he said.
"There are a number of ways to de-clutter at home using smart, space saving storage ideas, but sometimes calling in the professionals can help."
And then there's the internet. Simply search "de-clutter tips" and there's plenty of inspiration you can implement.
Here's some of Your Home's favourites:
■ Cull, cull cull: This insight from kidspot.com.au says you need to decide what you no longer need, what can be sold or given to charity and what needs to be put in storage. Be brave: fewer items means less mess.
■ The coat hanger experiment: becomingminimalist.com suggests hanging all your clothes with the hangers in reverse direction. After you you wear an item, hang it with the hanger facing the correct direction. After six months, ditch any clothes still hung in the reverse direction.
■ Junk baskets: Several Pinterest posts advocate giving each family member a stylish basket. If they're "junk" is left around the house, it's put in the basket and they're repsonsible for putting it away.
■ The 31 Day Detox: Another piece of inspiration from Pinterest. This plan allocates 15 minutes a day to problem areas such as paperwork, kitchen cabinets and the car as part of a 31-day de-cluttering challenge.
