THE great thing about winter is the excuse to relax in front of an open fire.
Better still, why not take advantage of Sydney's relatively mild winters to relax around an outdoor fireplace like a chiminea.
Chimineas date back at least 400 years when they were used in Mexican villages for cooking as well as warmth.
Traditionally made of clay, the chiminea's design means it can be used in the rain (presumably while people shelter under a nearby verandah) without the risk of the fire being extinguished.
Aussie Heatwave Fireplaces owner Elizabeth Fenton said today's chimineas were functional works of art.
"They create a magical ambience by providing the warmth and atmosphere of an open fire," Ms Fenton said.
Chimineas are also available in cast iron and clay, with accessories including a detachable barbecue/pizza oven.
Other benefits of chimineas are that they can be used to create a focal point on a deck or other outdoor entertainment area.
