Jesse Gibbs of Canterbury, New Zealand, wants a new flag with a smiley woolly sheep - apparently two-legged - and an ice-cream cone.
To this Aussie author, the design is just one New Zealand glass of wine short of encapsulating the best things about New Zealand.
"We have lots of sheep and love hokey pokey ice cream," he explained.
While Jesse's age is not provided, he appears to be one of the many children from all over the world who have proposed a new flag to take New Zealand into the future.
Maxi Otto, a 10 year old from Austria (not Australia), has proposed a three-panelled flag.
"There's yellow for the Maori, blue for the sea, brown for the suntan of the immigrants after their long way and the fertile earth," he said. His family writes that Maxi "is very interested in flags and therefore very happy about the possibility to take part in the design of a new flag".
Many contestants have taken liberties with New Zealand's favourite bird, the flightless kiwi. There are black kiwis, kiwis with the Southern Cross flag on them, kiwis with long beaks, kiwis on diets, upside-down kiwis, rainbow kiwis, red, white-on-black and black-on-white kiwis.
Zac Plunkett from Auckland has designed a Piwi flag.
"Purple is my mum's favourite colour and it's cool to have a rugby ball. As I am learning to play rugby now. This kiwi is pretty cool and his name is Kwiki."
Davy Lee from Auckland has proposed a "Happy Kwi" (sic).
"Because it portrays that we are a nation of happy, harmless kwis."
Another entrant's kiwi looks tired. Te Pepe, designed by David Astil from Waikato, conveys "that feel when our eyes gaze upon the flightless and majestic rare-Kiwi bird is a classic icon of NZ's deep relationship with our ancestors, their spirit, land and culture. Te Pepe Tamariki, Te Papa Aotearoa."
These flag designs are some of the 851 designs uploaded in the 10 days since the flag sharing site was launched.
It is part of an extended process to decide whether New Zealand should have a new flag. Earlier this year the NZ government appointed a 12-member "Flag Consideration Panel" to engage with the public about a possible new flag. As well as inviting New Zealanders to submit their designs, they will shortlist designs and ask voters to rank a group of chosen designs in a first referendum.
The winning design will run off against the current New Zealand flag in a second, binding referendum to be held next year . A Bill containing these measures is due to be introduced to Parliament .
"This process will give New Zealanders the rare privilege of having a say on one of the most important symbols of our nation," the deputy prime minister Bill English says.
The New Zealand Herald reported that some "offensive or divisive" designs have been turned down. One rejected entry featured the "smiling poop emoji". The panel is looking for designs that are independent, inclusive, enduring, community driven and dignified.
Panel chairman Professor John Burrows said the campaign was generating "passionate responses" from many people.
The current flag was adopted in 1902 and since the 1960s New Zealanders have been debating whether it should be replaced. Suggestions for alternative flag designs have been put forward from time to time, but until now there has never been an official public debate.
