The Princes Highway has been voted the worst section of road on the NSW South Coast according to Australia’s largest road survey – the National Roads and Motorists’ Association’s Seeing Red on Roads campaign.
NRMA local Director Alan Evans said nearly 12,000 motorists took the time to vote for the worst section of road across NSW and the ACT, with local motorists voting the Princes Highway south of Jervis Bay as the worst section of road on the South Coast due to narrow lanes and poor surfaces.
“The Princes Highway was not only voted the worst road on the South Coast, it also made the top four worst roads across NSW and the ACT,” Mr Evans said.
“It was closely followed by Kings Highway for the notoriously dangerous stretch of road at Clyde Mountain.
“While we welcome the funding commitments made at both levels of Government what needs to happen is a coordinated upgrade of all sections of the highway south of Jervis Bay.”
The NSW and Federal Governments have committed $8.7 million to build new heavy vehicle rest areas of the Princes Highway and $1.8 million to upgrade the section of highway at Dignam’s Creek.
“Locals know only too well the problems with the Kings Highway, many of our local members have told me that it’s rare to travel from Canberra to the coast without seeing an incident because of fog, poor road surface and narrow lanes,” Mr Evans said.
The Roads and Maritime Service is also in the process of slope stabilisation works at Clyde Mountain on the Kings Highway and reviewing the sections either side of Braidwood.

Across Sydney nearly one-in-ten road users said Pennant Hills Road was the worst road to travel on, with Parramatta Road a close second and the M5 Motorway third.
Over the last four years, more than 47,000 people have participated in the NRMA’s Seeing Red on Roads campaign.
