Olympic long-distance runner Craig Mottram has won the 2014 Sun-Herald City2Surf with a time of 41 minutes and 56 seconds.
Mottram, a native Melburnian and bronze medal winner in the 2005 World Championship of Athletics, narrowly edged out Sydneysider Brad Milosevic, who crossed the finish line with a time of 42 minutes and 18 seconds.
The first-placed female was Casey Wood from Adelaide, with a time of 47 minutes and 59 seconds. In second place was Milly Clark from Sydney, with a time of 48:44. Third position went to Clare Geraghty from Brisbane in 49:29.
More than 80,000 entrants competed in the 14-kilometre run.
The third placed male was David McNeill from Melbourne who clocked in at 42:31.
In the Elite Wheelchair category, Kurt Fearnley from Newcastle crossed the line first with a time of 36:09, followed by Richard Nicholson from Canberra with a time of 43:40. Christie Dawes from Newcastle was the first female to finish with a time of 45:10.
Sunday's event will raise more than $4 million for hundreds of Australian charities. This tally will continue to grow, with fund-raising staying open for another four weeks.
Race director Rebecca Wilmer said: “Once again we are overwhelmed by the support for this great event. The City2Surf, and its associated sister events around the country, are among the biggest fund-raising drivers for hundreds of charities across Australia so we are extremely happy with the amount raised for such worthy causes.”
Fund-raising has been a key part of the City2Surf since 1971, with the event raising more than $20 million for charities, making it one of the most successful initiatives of its kind in Australia.
