THE former head of the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong, Bishop Emeritus William Edward Murray (pictured) died last week, aged 93.
Bishop Peter Ingham said Bishop Murray served Campbelltown and other parts of the diocese for 22 years.
"Between 1975 and 1996 when he served was a time of great change and development for the church," Bishop Ingham said.
"He made provisions for the vast expanding Macarthur area with the establishment of new parishes to provide for growing needs."
Bishop Ingham remembered Bishop Murray as man with a "sharp sense of humour".
John Therry Catholic High School has a William E. Murray Hall named in honour of the bishop emeritus.
He was ordained by Cardinal Norman Gilroy in 1945 and held a doctorate from the Gregorian University in Rome.
Bishop Emeritus Murray became a Member of the Order of Australia in 1988.
