Locals turn Campbelltown gym into a health club

WHAT started as a small physiotherapy business in Macquarie Fields and Park Central is now a family-run management team taking over the old Fitness First gym in Campbelltown.

The new Fit HQ will be run by Campbelltown locals and physiotherapists Erica Parcio-Cooke, her husband Andrew Cooke, and her brother John Parcio with his wife Alex.

They say they will bring health workers and a gym together like never before in the area.

Mr Parcio is the operations manager and says Campbelltown's general health is a concern and they hope to help.

"Rates of obesity and chronic disease are rising and usually a gym and health practitioners are very separate, but we bring them together," he said.

"One of the the things we'll offer are health packs where we screen you, give the information to personal trainers and they come up with a program with only your health in mind."

They have made more than $1 million of renovation for the new owners.

The four will control the day-to-day running of the gym.

But it's more than just a gym.

"It's a health club," Mrs Parcio-Cooke said.

"We have a gym, a rehab centre which will offer physiotherapy, massage and a nutritionist, it has a hair and beauty salon, a creche, a cafe, a 'ladies only' weight training area, a hot yoga studio and a Crossfit centre."

The hot yoga studio is the first in the area with the closest being in Wollongong or Sutherland.

"We want to give people choices to feel comfortable," Mrs Parcio-Cooke said.

"That's why we will offer the women's only section, so if women want to get healthy in private, we want to give them that choice."

More than 3000 members are signed up at present.

■The grand opening is on Saturday, February 16, 9am-3pm at 1/1 Tindall Street, Campbelltown. There will be a huge range of entertainment on the fun day. Details: www.fithq.net.au or contact us on 4626 8600.
