A caption writer for a major Canadian newspaper has used a celebrity photo gallery to poke fun at the rich and to praise the "Occupy Wall Street" protesters - earning an instant Twitter fan club.
The 29 images in the "Celebrity Photos of the Week", published on The Globe and Mail's website, combined photographs of Hollywood stars at events with people holding placards at the demonstrations across the United States.
"Yes, stars came out in force last week to show their support for the brave little people taking part in Occupy Wall Street," an introduction to the gallery said.
The caption writer was not identified. The weekly gallery's captions usually take a light-hearted look at celebrities, although it appears this is the first time it has included commentary on the protests.
One caption beside a photo of singer Selena Gomez and director Eli Roth talking said: "Selena Gomez, attending the premiere of 'The Thing', is delighted by Eli Roth's discourse on how power belongs to those who control the means of production. You'd be good at feigning interest, too, if you were dating Justin Bieber."
A caption of actress Lauren Conrad posing for the camera said: "Lauren Conrad, well-known chronicler of the down and out in Orange Country, wore shorts to the polo match to show her support for people who can't afford long pants, something she read about online one time or something."
The next photo in the gallery featured a protester carrying a sign with the words "One nation under greed" and the caption: "What the hell?!? How did this photo of an Occupy Wall Street protester in Los Angeles taken the day before the polo match get here? Our apologies. [CWP is investigating; soothing photo to follow]."
Even A-lister George Clooney was not spared.
A photo caption of him walking said: "Left-leaning actor/director George Clooney attends the after-party for the premiere of 'The Ides of March' in a swank and exclusive club in Manhattan last week. He said last week he would pay more attention to the Occupy Wall Street movement were he not so busy attending events like this. Seriously. That's what he said."
The gallery has been shared on Twitter more than 2200 times, with some users hailing the "comic talent" of the writer.
The Occupy Wall Street protests started about a month ago and are meant to draw attention to corporate greed and corruption.
The protest organisers said on their website: "The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%."
A similar protest is planned in Sydney for this Saturday.
