Tigers need to win next two matches

26 Aug, 2009 11:23 AM
WESTS Tigers are still in with a chance of reaching this season's NRL finals despite the 26-18 loss against Parramatta at Sydney Football Stadium last Friday.

Slipping into 10th spot on the ladder, the Tigers' impressive six-game winning streak came to an end and they need to win their two remaining matches or their season is almost certainly over.

Gold Coast Titans will be the first to stand in the way of the Tigers on Saturday at Skilled Park. (A loss would leave our local team with only a very slim mathematical chance, depending on results by other teams.)

The vital final premiership round will pit the Tigers against the Bulldogs at Sydney Football Stadium on September 4.

Two wins would put the Tigers on 30 points and into the finals for what has been an amazing season for smashing club records.

Tigers' Taniela Tuiaki who will miss the remaining games as he has a broken leg set a new club record for the most tries scored in one season.

The crowd of almost 35,000 last Friday night was also the biggest home ground tally ever recorded by Wests Tigers and the biggest recorded in NSW for 2009.

Sales of Tigers merchandise have gone through the roof, making them the code's favourite team with fans. A run in the finals would only ensure more loyal supporters would be kitted out in black, white and orange.

When they take to the paddock on Saturday, Wests Tigers will have to overcome a heavy injury toll, with Tuiaki out and needing surgery, and second-rower Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan suffering knee injuries and full-back Tim Moltzen a possible fractured collarbone.

Wests Tigers' game against the Titans starts at 5.30pm on Saturday.
