TWO friends who have been riding motorbikes since they were aged five are reaping the rewards on the motocross tracks around Macarthur.
Ruse rider Zakk Wanstall, 11, and St Helens Park boy Jonathan Walker, 12, recently achieved great results within their club, the Macarthur District Motorcycle Club.
Zakk won the club championship's 11 years, 65cc class and Jonathan came a close runner-up in the 85cc class.
Both riders know the Oran Park and Appin motocross layouts like the back of their hands, having raced in 18 races during six events throughout the season, to achieve their great results.
Zakk's understandably proud father Joey said the two boys supported and encouraged each other during races.
``Zakk's pretty good, in fact he's phenomenal on the bike,'' Joey said.
``Considering it's his first year in competitive racing, he's going really well.
``We'll see how he goes with it but it's pretty expensive to try to compete with all the travelling involved around Australia.''
Zakk's victory came as a surprise he believed he had finished second in the championship, but was pleased on hearing he had actually seized first place.
In a remarkable year for Ambarvale High School student Jonathan, second place might not be as good as winning, but it's a great feat that the youngster even managed to throw his leg over the bike this year.
Only a few months ago Jonathan sustained a fractured hip after being knocked down by a car.
Believing he would never race again, he showed dedication and commitment to a sport he loves to challenge for this year's title.
Jonathan has been racing for two years.
Although placing second this season, he has tasted success before having won last year's 10 years, 65cc division. Both are in preparation already for next season.
