MACQUARIE Fields mixed martial arts competitor Luke Standing lived up to his name to remain the last man standing in his first two professional fights and soon hopes to make it three in a row.
Competing in the sport more commonly known as cage fighting, Standing defeated opponent Robert David in his debut contest and in his second fight beat Mike Aarts from Adelaide.
With a background in boxing, Standing discovered another discipline of martial arts a few years ago that could benefit him and he hasn't looked back.
"I started boxing when I was 15 and fought up until I was about 21, I kept training on and off for a couple of years, then I found Brazilian jiu jitsu," he said.
"I love to compete and test myself so I want to keep training hard and stay busy fighting and see where it takes me.
"I wasn't nervous before the fights, but very anxious to get in there and get it over with.
"Now I'm just looking to stay active and keep training and getting better."
Competing in the 65-kilogram category, the 26-year-old draws on his experience in a range of martial arts to improve his skills.
Training under the guidance of Anthony Perosh, Elvis Sinosic and Paul Sinosic at Sinosic and Perosh Martial Arts, Liverpool, Standing has competed as an amateur in a range of combat disciplines.
"To be successful in mixed martial arts you must train in Brazilian jiu jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing and boxing," he said.
"I've fought amateur kickboxing, amateur boxing, as well as pankration [modified mixed martial arts] and many Brazilian jiu jitsu tournaments.
"It was all a lead-up to me turning pro."
Standing's next pro fight is at the Brace For War 14 event at the Canberra Canberra Convention Centre on February 18.
He will face tough competitor Giancarlo Embrador.
Late last year Standing had to endure some pain and could only perform limited training.
A fight scheduled for November had to be cancelled when Standing broke his hand in training and was kept out of action for six weeks.
Standing is familiar with his next opponent and expects a competitive fight.
"I've seen him fight before and he's a tough bloke so it should be a good fight," he said.
