CAMPBELLTOWN City Kangaroos are set to return to their glory days in the Group 6 Country Rugby League first grade competition next season.
The Kangaroos will be under the guidance of former Cronulla Sharks NSW Cup coach Alex Melville, also a former Kangaroos junior and Penrith under-20s premiership-winning coach.
Melville decided to coach the club he loves when Cronulla decided not to field a NSW Cup team next season.
``I was at the 1983 grand final when the Roos beat The Oaks 24-6,'' Melville said.
``I played juniors with the Roos and wished I had the opportunity to play seniors with them.
``The return of this great club is a challenge I'm looking forward to.''
The ``health of the club'' will be Melville's priority next season.
``The philosophy that we all partake in rugby league is fun and enjoyment, no matter what the level,'' Melville said.
``Playing for the Roos in 2010 will be a fun and enjoyable experience, in which the players will be well coached.
``Putting in place systems and structures that are going to hold up for the club through the bad times is important.
``We are not a team, rather a club and we're not after a short term fix, but people who will be with us in three or four years' time.''
Many famous identities have worn the Kangaroos colours including current Australian and Wests Tigers' coach Tim Sheens, who lifted the premiership trophy as a Kangaroo in 1983.
Melville noted a few players who could make a name for themselves in the Group 6 competition next season.
``Chris Williamson, our senior player of the year in 2009, could be ready to step up,'' Melville said.
``Alex Gao, a young Vietnamese winger excites me with his footwork and pace.''
Playing their home games at Campbelltown Stadium, the Kangaroos, original tenants of the ground when it was known as Orana Park, are looking forward to renewing rivalries with their Group 6 adversaries.
The Kangaroos' training sessions for first grade, reserves and under-18 teams will start on December 1 from 6.30pm at Stromferry Reserve, Raby.
