Basketball at midnight is on for the young

02 Feb, 2011 12:00 AM
WHEN most things have closed down for the day, midnight basketball comes to life in Minto.

Those aged 12 to 18 can take part in the free program, which involves six teams and combines action on court with life skills workshops.

Each night in order to play participants must attend a workshop on topics like drugs, alcohol, getting a job, staying healthy and anger management.

Registrations are now open and mayor Paul Lake is urging local young people to give it a go.

"This is all about creating a positive social environment where young people can make new friends and show support to their peers," Cr Lake said.

"The compulsory workshops enable these kids to come out of their shells and talk openly about the real issues that they face."

The program runs every Friday night for eight weeks.

The next tournament is scheduled to be held from February to April at Minto Indoor Sports Centre.
