 Macarthur seat to vanish?

Macarthur seat to vanish?

06 May, 2009 10:30 AM
Labor has proposed that the seat of Macarthur be abolished but the Liberals want the boundaries changed to make it safer for sitting MP, Pat Farmer.

BOTH major political parties have proposed changes to the federal electoral boundaries that would see Werriwa pushed further south to take in almost all of Campbelltown.

The difference is that Labor wants to see the neighbouring seat of Macarthur – held by Liberal MP Pat Farmer and including parts of Camden and Wollondilly – abolished.

The Australian Electoral Commission has released submissions from both parties on how federal electorates should be realigned.

The commission is in the middle of deciding which seat will be abolished in NSW and it wants feedback on suggestions it has received so far.

Under Labor’s submission, all suburbs east of the Camden Bypass (such as Mount Annan) would be included in Werriwa and Camden itself would be added to the rural seat of Hume.

The Liberal Party wants the boundary of the Macarthur electorate to be re-aligned to take in all of Camden, Wingecarribee and Wollondilly (except for Warragamba and Silverdale).

In short, the Labor plan would delete a Liberal seat, and the Liberal plan would make Macarthur much safer Liberal turf for its MP, Pat Farmer.

Werriwa Labor MP Chris Hayes declined to comment, stating that the matter was to be decided by an independent board.

Mr Farmer said he was not too concerned about either suggestion by the Liberal and Labor parties, but said he would like to run again – whether the seat was called Macarthur or Hume.

‘‘I don’t want to see Macarthur go,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s an historic seat.’’

If Macarthur was abolished, it would likely spell the end of the short-lived political aspirations of Labor’s candidate for the seat in the 2007 federal election, Nick Bleasdale.

Having only narrowly missed out on a win, Mr Bleasdale last year called for an early preselection of candidates, saying he was keen to take on Mr Farmer again.

‘‘I have a life outside of politics . . . I was given a wonderful opportunity in the last election to play a part in changing the government of the country, and it was a lot of fun,’’ he said on Monday. ‘‘There’s no point in crying over spilled milk.’’
