Campbelltown residents jump on Government's home-owner help

01 Jul, 2009 02:07 PM
WESTERN Sydney residents continued to take advantage of grants to first-home buyers in May, with Campbelltown residents getting the second-largest amount in the state.

About $2.6million went to new home-owners in the area, in grants and benefits.

The top five suburbs for first-home owners' grants were in western Sydney.

People buying a new home are eligible to get up to $24,000 in grants and those buying an existing home can get up to $14,000.

Premier Nathan Rees said 7300 home-buyers across the state received help in May.

``First-home buyers in Liverpool again topped the list, with buyers in Campbelltown, Wentworthville, Parramatta and Blacktown close behind,'' he said.

``Since the introduction of first-home buyer grants in July 2000, the Government has provided grants and stamp-duty exemptions worth over $5.7billion to more than 402,000 first-home buyers.''

Last week, home-buyers may have been spooked by Treasurer Eric Roozendaal's warning that the NSW Opposition would block legislation in the upper house which enables home buying help to continue.

However, the Greens voted with the Government for the legislation.
