Work goes green

11/06/2008 11:36:00 AM
IN ONLY five weeks, around 30 small businesses across

Macarthur have committed to changing their business practices and working towards sustainability.

And more and more businesses are working with the

Symmetry Sustainable Business program to focus on their ‘‘triple bottom line’’.

But rather than the regular ‘‘people, planet, profit’’, they

have come up with their own version: environment, community and prosperity.

Bill Parker mentors and helps small business to improve their environmental management skills and practices.

‘‘We don’t make any decisions or tell people what to do,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re there to give them the right type of training they need.’’

Mr Parker works with businesses through the levels of

bronze, silver and gold.

‘‘Bronze takes them about a day to come to a workshop

and identify areas of improvement and awareness,’’ he said.

‘‘Silver is how to ‘green up’ your office and energy efficiency – that’s one of the keys of helping them manage costs and plan and a review sustainable management plan.

‘‘Gold is then the proven performance stage.’’

Symmetry is a unique program in Australia, Mr Parker

said, and is open to any small business trading with 20 staff members or fewer.

‘‘As much as it’s a green program it’s about helping the business improve,’’ he said. ‘‘They’re empowered through the whole process and that’s important for small business.

‘‘Small business particularly in Macarthur is an essential

part of the community. It’s a tribute to them that they see the opportunity.’’

The project is run by the Centre of Excellence in Sustainability and sponsored jointly by Macarthur Regional Organisation of Councils, the University of Western Sydney and the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living.

Symmetry will be holding a bronze graduation ceremony

at the Beer Shed in late June.

Fantastic to see some press for the Symmetry program! The Macarthur community should be very proud as this program is very unique and is a very positive initiative that goes a long way in supporting local businesses.

This is a wonderful initiative and it is great to see the Macarthur District leading the way. The slowing of the economy makes it necessary for small business to save money and help the enviromnent at the same time.

It is important that small business takes an active role in sustainability. Too often it is left to the 'big industry/business' and Government, when the required approach is a whole community response. Everyone has a role to play. It is great to see a program like Symmetry get off the ground so successfully and the leadership by Macarthur District to make the bold steps. I would thus encourage local businesses to sign up to the program and prove that small simple steps is all that is needed to contribute towards a sustainable future for all.

Often business can't wait for government to devise policy or establish a framework to assist making business more sustainable. It's very encouraging to see local programs such as Symmetry show leadership and direction by assisting their local communities. Let's hope this has a ripple effect throughout other likeminded business communities in Australia

Good on you Macarthur! Let's show the rest of Australia that we can develop a cleaner greener future for all. I feel proud that our local businesses are leading the way and I'll be shopping locally more often. Let's see more small owners join this important program.
