 Werriwa MP sidelined to Fowler

Werriwa MP sidelined to Fowler

20 Nov, 2009 11:57 AM
A BACK-ROOM deal to force the Labor MP Chris Hayes to move from his seat of Werriwa to nearby Fowler so Laurie Ferguson could take Werriwa was designed to end a decades-old factional war in western Sydney, sources said.

The union official who had been earmarked for Fowler, Ed Husic, now needs another seat. There was talk yesterday of putting him into Chifley, held by the Government Whip, Roger Price.

The rescue of Mr Ferguson was a victory for the Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, over her ministerial colleague and NSW powerbroker, Anthony Albanese. She instructed that Mr Ferguson be found a seat after his electorate of Reid was abolished under an electoral redistribution.

Mr Albanese objected but had no choice after the Herald revealed the Gillard intervention. ''The Red Baron has bombed us all,'' said a factional heavyweight.

Ms Gillard and the Prime Minister owe Mr Ferguson because he supported their leadership coup in December 2006.

Mr Ferguson wanted Fowler, being vacated at the election when Julia Irwin retires. Mr Hayes was fiercely resisting moves to push him out of Werriwa. He is from the electorate, and has strong local support.

But Fowler's branches are controlled by the Right and Mr Ferguson is of the Left. The Right feared that Mr Ferguson would turn Fowler into a Left seat. Mr Hayes is of the Right so he will consolidate Fowler for the faction. Werriwa's branches are controlled by the Left, making it a better fit for Mr Ferguson.

A Right source said had Mr Ferguson been given Fowler, the Left would have seized both Fowler and Werriwa.

The ALP national executive will meet tomorrow night and go through the motions of opening preselections for the Sydney seats of Werriwa, Fowler, Throsby, Greenway and John Murphy's seat of Lowe, which will be renamed Reid. The national executive will decide the candidates for the seats.

Well let's see what Mr Hayes really thinks of his community and what the community really thinks of him and his party. If he is community minded (and I believe he is) he should resign form Labor and run as an independent. If the community really supports him over the party then he will be re-elected easily. If not he, like his state comrades, obviously has more regard for the party than the people. If he stands and is not relected then it shows that the majority of voters are brainwashed fools if they relect an out of area labor candidate. Compulsory voting should be abolished. This is why we get such crappy government.

Hey billy, that read just like a liberal script. The important thing to remember is that chris is still here to fight for western sydney.

Now let's see if I get this right: The ALP - highly vocal critics of Pat Farmer for not living in his Macarthur electorate - now want to put an 'outsider' into the seat of Werriwa (currently held by an 'insider'); the 'insider' will then become an 'outsider' in the seat of Fowler; and the 'insider' earmarked for Fowler will become an 'outsider' in the seat of Chifley. This is typical old-fashioned factional Labor politics - back-room deals and payola at it's hypocritical worst! Chris Hayes as an independent in Werriwa? He would romp home!

"I will not nominate for another seat" You were highly critical of Pat when he moved, where are your morals now? Maybe you should resign instead and take your multimillion dollar pension.

Since when has the Left controlled the branches in Werriwa? Center Unity has four of the six branches and the other two have both voted unamimous support for Chris Hayes. Laurie Ferguson is a total waste of space. We don't need this political dinasour in Werriwa.
