They're desperate for your blood

11 Mar, 2008 11:00 PM
WHILE many are enjoying Easter eggs and spending time with family and friends, those fighting leukaemia and other blood disorders will be relying on blood donations to help them through Easter.

With fewer collection days and the limited shelf life of some blood components over long weekends, blood supplies may run short.

So the Red Cross is asking Campbelltown residents to help out and give blood.

Red Cross local nursing unit manager Meredith Donoghue said about 1200 donations of blood were needed each day across NSW. About 80 patients a day need platelets which last for only five days before they expire.

``About a third of all donated blood is used to help support chemotherapy treatments, many of these for children with leukaemia,'' she said. ``Chemotherapy kills off blood cells and depletes blood count, so these patients rely on the generous blood donations from hundreds of Australians for their survival.''

One in three Australians needs blood at some stage in their life, but only one in three gives blood.

The large mobile unit will be at East Campbelltown Hall, Waminda Reserve on:

Monday, March 17: 2pm-7pm

Tuesday, March 18: 2pm-7pm

Wednesday, March 19: 2pm-7pm

Thursday, March 20: 10am - 2.45pm
