Restaurant owner seeks public help

10 Mar, 2010 08:42 AM
THE owner of the old Fisher's Ghost Restaurant wants to sell the decaying property.

In an interview with the Advertiser yesterday, Nirma Taluja of Liverpool said she would seek expressions of interests from the public to end years of complaints about the rundown premises.

Dr Taluja said she had spent more than $100,000 two years ago to restore the building, but that a large tree on the property continued to destroy piping.

She said the leak was uncontrollable on one occasion and that she received a water bill for $46,000.

``I really can't fix anything until I have permission to cut down these trees,'' she said.

``Now I am going to ask the community what I'm supposed to do, because I've done everything I can.''

Local campaigners Kate Toomey and Heather Bowman kicked off a campaign last month to prompt action.

They publicly pleaded with Dr Taluja to either restore the historic building or sell it.

Mrs Toomey and Mrs Bowman are organising a petition to hand to Campbelltown Council next month.

Backed by the Advertiser, they will also meet the Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society on March 27.

But Dr Taluja said she wanted to work with the community to find a resolution.

``I'm happy to do something about this, so I ask the community for their expressions of interest or I will put the property up for tender,'' she said. ``All the reports that I need to change the building plus other fees will cost me $20,000 to try to clean everything up.

``A fire hit the building once ... not twice.''

The building dates back to the 1830s and was originally a flour mill. In the early 20th century it was Milby Private Hospital, the birthplace of many older residents.

It later became known as Fisher's Ghost Restaurant but the building has been falling apart and vacant for years.

Dr Taluja's property also includes Domino's Pizza and Liquorland.

People can forward their expressions of interest to Nirma Taluja on 0400 288 288.
