Refugees are inspiring

09 Apr, 2008 12:16 PM
THE last memories Emmanuel Nyosemana and his uncle Jean D'Amour Chitegetse have of Tanzania is the murder of their parents.

The two travelled from camp to camp in Uganda and Tanzania to seek refuge.

But on their way Mr Chitegetse's brother Emmanuel's father was killed.

Both Mr Chitegetse's parents died in Uganda.

In 2006, the United Nations labelled the two "in high risk of danger" and asked Australian authorities if they could live in the country.

Since then, Mr Chitegetse and Emmanuel, 10, have resided here for one year and they attend the Macarthur Adventist College in Macquarie Fields.

Mr Chitegetse, 24, is completing year10.

The school chaplin Andre Asamasaga said that he was settling in well.

"It's not easy to be that age and completing year10 but JD [Jean D'Amour] really puts himself out there and he's been extraordinary," he said.

"I take my hat off to them. It's very inspiring."

The two have settled at Fairfield.

Mr Chitegetse said he treats Emmanuel as though he is his own son.

"We came here because we were in trouble when we arrived from my country where I was born, Uganda," he said. "For a long time I was there and again and again I left different camps. The situation became so bad that the United Nations decided to see if Australia could accept me. They took us because we were in danger.

"Over there if they don't like your race they will kill you and that's why they killed my brother."

Mr Chitegetse said he saw Emmanuel's mother as his own.

"She was like my mum but one day she disappeared and even now, today, we don't know where she is. They keep trying to look for her but they cannot find her."

Mr Chitegetse will join his classmates on the Kokoda Trail and they have urged people to donate money for their fund-raiser.
