Out of her shell

SIX years ago, Wendy White joined Toastmasters to gain the confidence she needed to land a job.

It worked.

The Raby woman is these days employed with St Gregory's College as a registrar and she urges other local people to follow her lead and get involved with Toastmasters.

The confidence-boosting program led her to volunteer for the organisation to help people who felt the same way she did.

In recognition of her efforts, Mrs White was presented with an Area Governor Merit Award at the District 70 Toastmasters annual changeover.

Mrs White said she was an active member of two branches in Campbelltown and helped people with various types of confidence difficulties.

``The training is all about confidence, communication and leadership,'' she said.

``We have professionals who need help with PowerPoint presentations and even couples going through divorce.

``In my case, I gained the confidence to promote the school and to speak to families on a daily basis.''

The Speechcraft and Youth Leadership programs provide training courses to the wider community.

Mrs White has been elected as the Phillip Division Governor and will be responsible for managing 40 Toastmasters clubs from Mittagong to Ashfield.

``The one thing that Toastmasters taught me is to never be critical of anyone and instead give them positive points,'' she said.

``One of the things I love is watching someone grow to become an amazing speaker, communicator and leader.''

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has taught more than four million people how to become better public speakers and leaders.

The non-profit organisation has more than 500 clubs in Australia.
