Minto Mall cops another bucketing

17 Feb, 2010 08:50 AM
BUCKETS were lined up inside Minto Mall last week to catch rainwater leaking through the roof, sparking another round of disgust in shoppers.

A shopper was furious that an electronic game had an attached cord leading to a power-board laying in a puddle of water outside the Big Lot.

By last Tuesday, most of the buckets were taken away leaving the water dripping onto the floor.

Owners Michael Kwok and Helen James, of Kapb Management in St Leonards, still refuse to return any of the phone calls made by the Advertiser.

Savills Australia real estate agency was given the job of selling the rundown complex last August but an accountant at Kapb said the mall had not been sold.

A Minto resident, who did not wish to be named, said she was ``bewildered'' that no one would intervene.

``There are so many words to describe the mall like decrepit, dangerous, disgusting and dirty,'' she said.

``I have lived in Minto for about 28 years and my husband's family have lived in the area for 103 years Minto Mall hasn't always been this way.''

The shopper said she remembered when the mall had ``everything''.

``There were a variety of shops and celebrity chefs would visit the mall and have displays,'' she said.

``I can't see why people have let it go like this especially when everyone has been complaining about it.

``My greatest fear is that someone will seriously injure themselves or even be killed because of the safety hazards at the mall.''

Last June, former mayor Russell Matheson called the Minto shopping centre ``disgraceful'' and publicly called on its owners to sell it and let someone else run it ``properly''.

Workers at Kapb initially told the Advertiser that Mr Kwok and Ms James were at lunch but later told the paper that the pair were overseas.

The duo also own Fairmont Resort in the Blue Mountains, which has been criticised as rundown and neglected.

The owners of Minto mall do not own the Fairmont any more it has been repo'd by the bank. They lost millions and have no sense of business. In the mountains we found the more negative press they received the better as this dropped the value of the business thus enabling the banks to kick them out. There is no smart strategy at work in regards to the owners they try to take advantage of Australian laws and plead ignorance when busted for it. maybe we can organise a sit in or protest the owners own big lot so what if everyone stopped people shopping there or something like that maybe show the same respect for their shop as they do for our suburb?

What can we say! we know it is just a matter of time someone is going to be injured. Its a shame, then the owners will be up for the death of a public visitor to their shopping centre. When are the owners, Michael Kwok and Helen James, of Kapb Management going to get their act together and put their hands up and say, "we've had enough and can't do it anymore!" Take a look at the comments from members of the Fix Minto Mall Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/group.php ?gid=119843789358 . So many people are upset that their local community shopping complex has been left in such a state.

Yet another example of the deplorable condition of the Mall. The Mall not only leaks but smells musty. As you go up the escalators, the musty smell enters your nostrils. Walking in the mall is a definite hazard. With all the water around, the buckets and tiles that are very slippery, it is a wonder that nobody has broken a bone. With all the One Minto project going ahead, when will the Council finally step in. They have a duty of care to the public to ensure safety and health standards are maintained. To say that they are is a joke. The Mall is nothing now but a rundown ramshackle eyesore. Please do something before it is too late. With all new families moving into the area, do they not deserve to have a decent place to shop, have a coffee and relax. When push comes to shove, the owners do not give a care about the state of the Mall. But wait till someone sues them, then they will come running, saying we did not know. Today tonight, come back and do some more terrible publicity for the sake of the general public many of whom are elderly and cannot get on buses to travel further afield. The public have had a gutful do something now before its too late.
