Mayor takes new approach to fight gas plant

04 Nov, 2009 11:24 AM
CAMPBELLTOWN Mayor Aaron Rule has demanded a solution and less political grandstanding over the approval of Leafs Gully power plant south of Rosemeadow.

His call comes after the State Opposition slammed Environment and Climate Change Minister John Robertson for refusing to answer questions on the development in Parliament last week.

Mr Robertson said the power plant was an issue of planning, not environment.

Cr Rule said that was the main problem.

The power plant was approved under Part 3A the controversial planning act clause which allows the Minister for Planning to sideline local councils and take control of the approval process.

Cr Rule said the section needed to be reviewed or abolished.

``Part 3A has gone way too far,'' he said.

``It should only be used for things like the Olympic Games or huge rail links, not on issues such as these.

``Part 3A is an attack on local government's rights and it has overstepped the mark.''

The Opposition seems to be in tune with the Labor mayor and has vowed to scrap Part 3A.

Opposition climate change and environment spokeswoman Catherine Cusack raised the matter after Campbelltown Council called on the Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, to assess the project.

``It's clear the NSW Labor Government is refusing to consider or investigate the environmental concerns of the local community,'' she said.

``An appeal to the Federal Environment Minister is the last best hope for residents.

``Wollondilly MP Phil Costa should be demanding that John Robertson support Campbelltown Council's calls for the Leafs Gully Power Plant to be assessed by Peter Garrett under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act.''

Mr Costa said he maintained his original position, opposing the gas plant.

``If AGL has a case to answer under the federal jurisdiction I'm confident the Commonwealth Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts will hold AGL to account,'' he said. ``My opposition to Leafs Gully has been well documented.

``I'm disappointed with the outcome but the NSW planning system has made a decision.''
